Maryhill Museum
Native Arts Week
The first day of my 5 day Native American Flute performance at the Maryhill Museum of Art was in front of 150 third and fourth grade students from different schools along the Columbia River region. By the end of the week, the audience had grown to 750 boys and girls. I was invited by the museum on the recommendation of artist Pat Courtney-Gold. The invitation was indeed an honor and a privilege.
The Maryhill Museum of Art is located in Goldendale, Wa. above the scenic Columbia River Gorge 100 miles east of Portland, Or. More than 10,000 visitors per month from all over the world view their collections and exhibits.
As the week was winding down, I shared stories about my songs, my experiences as a Native American in this new world, and what it meant to be thankful for what we have. I give all the glory to The Creator for giving me the ability to play the flute and reach people with my music.
To speak and perform to a group of boys and girls was enlightening for me as well. I could recall the pure innocence of childhood. Except this time, I was the entertainment, spiritual advocate and Native American Flutist.
I Hope you enjoy all the smiling faces. Peace and prayers.
James E. Greeley.
